Background and Summary:
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) signed into law on February 17, 2009, includes a 30% consumer tax credit (up to $1,500 total) for the purchase of new 75% thermally efficient bio-mass burning stoves (i.e. wood pellets and multi-fuels). This is for purchases made from 1/1/2009 to 12/31/2010. The credit can be used towards the stove and installation costs.  The credit applies to new equipment, in an existing principle residence, owned and used where the tax payer is the original owner of the stove.

How much is the Tax Credit?
30% of the total cumulative purchase price of all qualifying products and services up to $1,500. A credit is available in BOTH 2009 and in 2010 if all $1,500 are not used in one year.  If a homeowner claims less than $1,500 in 2009, the home owner can "carry over" the remainder of the $1,500 credit for use in relation to qualifying purchases in 2010.  However, the cumulative total of this credit cannot exceed $1,500 for both years.

What is a Tax Credit, and how do I receive it?

Consumers claim the credit on their federal income tax form at the end of the year. The credit then increases the tax refund or decreases the amount the taxpayer has to pay, dollar-for-dollar; whereas, tax deductions simply lower your taxable income. This credit is provided under the terms of the Internal Revenue Code Section 25(d)(3)(E).   Taxpayers must retain the Certificate of Qualification and receipts of purchase for tax recordkeeping purposes, but the certificate and receipt are not required to be attached to the tax return. Breckwell is not providing tax advice and you are highly encouraged to consult your tax advisor as to actual eligibility for the tax credit.

How do consumers know this efficiency data is accurate?

ALL BRECKWELL Wood Pellet and Multi-fuel stoves were tested for efficiency by, and the data generated by, Intertek Testing Services: a leading industry testing firm. This third-party, independent testing laboratory ensures that the efficiency data is accurate and credible. The testing was conducted in accordance with the CAN/CSA B415-1.0-2000 Method for Testing the Performance of Solid-Fuel-Burning Heating Appliances. All of the Breckwell stoves exceeded the 75% efficiency rating required for the tax credit.

How do I get the Breckwell Certificate of Qualification?
It is available at the dealer where you purchased the stove from.  You can also get one by clicking here.  Remember to keep this certificate with your records.

What if I buy multiple Breckwell stoves or have other qualifying expenditures?

The applicable credit allows for a maximum credit of 30% up to $1,500 for all qualifying purchases in total for 2009 and  2010.
